797 배롱나무 델타(Delta) 시리즈 - Plant Development Services에서 공급하는 자엽 배롱나무

델타시리즈 배롱나무

검은색에 가까운 암적자색 또는 암적갈색을 띠고 있는 잎의 색상으로 크게 주목을 받은 Delta 시리즈 배롱나무는 앞 게시물에서 본 초콜릿 모카를 포함하여 현재 모두 7종으로 구성되어 있는데 이들에 대하여 간단하게 알아보자. 델타시리즈는 미국 알라바마주에 있는 신품종 개발 전문회사인 Plant Development Services Inc.의 Southern Living Plant Collection에 속한다. 이 회사는 전세계 다수의 육종가들과 협력하여 신품종 개발과 공급을 주목적으로 하기 위하여 1996년 미국 굴지의 식물 유통업체인 Flowerwood Nursery에서 설립하였는데 현재 100개가 넘는 신품종 특허권을 보유하고 있다고 한다. 그 중에 배롱나무로는 델타시리즈와 Early Bird시리즈가 있는데 우선 델타시리즈부터 알아본다. 

앞 게시물에서 본 바와 같이 델타시리즈는 2009년 미국 특허를 신청한 델타 재즈 즉 초콜릿 모카로부터 시작이 되는데 이 맨 처음 품종은 미시시피주립대에서 개발한 것이었다. 그 다음 2014년 Delta Breeze (light lavender), Delta Eclipse (brilliant purple), Delta Moonlight (white), Delta Flame (dark red) 등 4개 품종을 추가하게 되며 그 이듬해 다시 Delta Fusion (dark pink)와 Delta Fuchsia (fuchsia)를 추가하게 된다. 델타 재즈를 제외한 나머지 품종들은 모두 이 회사 신품종 개발 담당 이사 겸 Transcend Nursery and Arboretum을 운영하고 있는 Buddy Lee라고 흔히 불리는 미국의 저명한 육종가 Robert Edward Lee가 육종한 것으로 보인다. 그가 개발한 re-blooming Azaleas는 철쭉류 중에서 가장 많이 팔리는 품종으로 유명하다.
