Ode : Intimation of Immortality from Early childhood(어린 시절 추억에서의 영생불멸의 암시)

 

 

영국의 낭만주의 대표 시인이자 계관시인인 윌리엄 워즈워스(William Wordsworth, 1770~1850)가 1807년에 발표한 11련으로 구성된 매우 긴 시인데 10련이 나탈리 우드와 워렌 비티가 주연한 유명한 헐리우드 영화 ‘초원의 빛’에서 나탈리 우드가 암송하는 장면이 나오는 바로 그 시이다. 그 긴 시 중 자연을 노래한 앞부분 1~3련을 소개한다. 

 

 

송가 : 어린 시절 추억에서의 영생불멸의 암시 

 

I 

There was a time when meadow, grove, and stream,

The earth, and every common sight,

To me did seem

Apparelled in celestial light,

The glory and the freshness of a dream.

It is not now as it hath been of yore;--

Turn wheresoe'er I may,

By night or day,

The things which I have seen I now can see no more.

 

과거에 이런 시절이 있었지, 초원과 숲 그리고

개울이 흐르던 대지와 모든 평범한 광경이

나에게는 하늘의 찬란한 광명 속에서

꿈의 영광과 생생함으로 보였던.

그러나 지금은 예전과 같지 않다.

어디로 가든지 간에

낮이든 밤이든

내가 봤던 것들은 이제는 더 이상 볼 수 없다.

The Rainbow comes and goes,

And lovely is the Rose,

The Moon doth with delight

Look round her when the heavens are bare,

Waters on a starry night

Are beautiful and fair;

The sunshine is a glorious birth;

But yet I know, where'er I go,

That there hath past away a glory from the earth.

 

무지개가 떴다가 사라지고,

아름다운 장미,

달은 즐겁게

맑은 하늘에서 사방으로 비춘다.

별빛이 반짝이는 시냇물은

아름답고 청정해 보인다.

햇빛이 찬란하게 새로 솟아 오른다.

하지만 나는 안다네, 어디로 가든지,

지상의 영광은 이미 사라졌다는 것을.

Now, while the birds thus sing a joyous song,

And while the young lambs bound

As to the tabor's sound,

To me alone there came a thought of grief:

A timely utterance gave that thought relief,

And I again am strong:

The cataracts blow their trumpets from the steep;

No more shall grief of mine the season wrong;

I hear the Echoes through the mountains throng,

The Winds come to me from the fields of sleep,

And all the earth is gay;

Land and sea

Give themselves up to jollity,

And with the heart of May

Doth every Beast keep holiday;--

Thou Child of Joy,

Shout round me, let me hear thy shouts, thou happy

Shepherd-boy!

 

이제 새들이 즐겁게 지저귀는 동안

어린 양들이 뛰놀 동안

작은 북소리에 맞추어.

나는 혼자서 슬픔에 빠졌다네.

때맞춰 들리는 외침이 나의 상념을 덜어주네,

그리고 나는 다시 마음을 굳게 다진다.

절벽의 폭포수는 트럼펫을 불고 있고

더 이상 슬픔으로 계절을 망치지 않을 거야

메아리가 온 산을 가득 채우고

바람이 불어와 졸리게 한다.

그리고 세상 모두가 즐겁다.

땅과 바다는

즐거움에 자신들을 맡겨라.

그리고 5월제의 마음으로

모든 동물들이여 휴일을 즐겨라

즐거운 아이여

나를 향해 외쳐라. 너의 외침을 들려다오. 그대 행복한

목동이여!
