초원의 빛이여, 꽃의 영광이여!

 

 

 

 

영국의 낭만주의 대표 시인이자 계관시인인 윌리엄 워즈워스(William Wordsworth, 1770~1850)가 1807년에 발표한 11련으로 구성된 매우 긴 시인데 바로 이 10련이 나탈리 우드와 워렌 비티가 주연한 유명한 헐리우드 영화 ‘초원의 빛’에서 나탈리 우드가 암송하는 장면이 나오는 바로 그 시이다. 원 제목은 Ode : Intimation of Immortality from Early childhood 즉  송가 : 어린 시절 추억에서의 영생불멸의 암시이다.

한때 그처럼 찬란했던 광채가

이제 영원히 내 눈앞에서 사라졌어도,

비록 아무도 되돌릴 수 없다 하여도

초원의 빛과 꽃의 영광의 시간을.

우리는 비통해 하지 않으리, 오히려

뒤에 남은 것에서 힘을 찾으리.

본원적인 공감 속에서

여태 있어왔고 앞으로도 영원히 있을 

인간의 고통에서 솟아나는

마음을 달래주는 생각에서,

죽음을 통찰하는 신앙 속에서,

지혜로운 마음을 가져다 준 세월 속에서
